Sometimes I get the feeling that monetizing blogs give the same sense of (false?) hope to bloggers the way MLM does to college students. Comparing the two however, I'd say monetizing blogs is more worthy of a trial. Because some people have done very well (read: got rich), many others want to follow suit. And hence the setting up of blogs for this purpose.

What they fail to understand is that good blogs (with huge advertising potential) have good contents. Most, if not all, rich bloggers (who make lots of money from blogging) began humbly by focusing on contents. The perks only began coming in as a 'bonus' somewhere along the way. Who would've thought they'd come this far?

Thaks for you comment aw, yes it's true John Chow is a seasoned expert and gaining the height he has gained in a short period of time is also due to his experience and maybe even his connections with people.

This is just a story of what is possible on the net, Malaysia is still far behind..i agree but who know's maybe there's some malaysians out there that will actually penetrate the US market, i belive there are already a few people out there but still need some time to mature.

But i agree with you la, it ain't easy .

It's OK to give some bloggers hope, "Oooh, maybe someday I will make RM12,000 a month too."

But the reality is

- John Chow is a seasoned tech professional, thus readers want to read him. How many successful Malaysians actually *need* or want to blog? If you don't have an established reputation or scarce expertise, people DON'T want to read you that much. Unless you write about sex, and sell ads to porn sites.

- John Chow is in the US, where the population is 300 million and the potential market to advertisers is much bigger. So companies are willing to pay to put ads on his site.

There is only one relatively successful blogger in SE Asia, and that's Xiaxue. But she admits her blog does not earn that much - she has to supplement that with appearing on a TV show and writing for magazines.

Even Kenny Sia about breaks even. His bandwidth is huge, and he has only several paid ads on this blog.
