Widget or No Widget?

As a person who has released a couple of Wordpress Themes in the last few months i have found that one major feature bloggers look for in a theme is the “widget” feature.

Personally i don’t really like or use widgets but there’s a good chunk of people who swear by it.

So my question is simple, do you prefer a widgetize theme,a non-widgetize theme or you really just don’t care?

I love widgets, but operate 3 blogs which 2 of them operate 2 different themes which are not widget capable. I love widgets for the simple fact that content can be added so easily and quickly. The only thing I don’t like, is that for some reason, I can drag widgets around, and change their order in FF, but I need to use IE in order to actual edit the content of the widgets, such as titles, options available under diff widgets and even the additional text widgets we can add with our own personal custom content. But thanks to IE tab, it makes it extra easy to switch.

Why not make a theme widget capable… make both parties happy… as long as it’s not obligating the person using your theme to use widgets if they don’t want to.

I would say that using widgetized theme really helps beginner users a lot, especially those who had no experience at all with HTML or PHP codes. With the ease of just clicking and copy/paste the code, it will be just easy to add your favorite script to the sidebar.

Some people who are already know how to ‘play’ with PHP/HTMl might say that widgets (gadgets) is not cool and prefer to do it manually.

Well, you have your own choices. :)

I am a lover of them. The reason I like them though is because I can change themes so very easily. I just change over my meta header information and a few codes in the footer and well the site is ready to go…I of course do more, but that is the basic necessary stuff. Widgets keeps everything else in line.

Very true! Another great reason… ’tis why I was frustrated for a little while, being so used to widget capable themes for a long time, and then falling non-capable ones… Boy, I didn’t know what I was going to do. LOL But I learned some things, and coped :)
