Matt Mullenweg posted on WTC today regarding “sponsored themes”.

This is currently a hot discussion among wordpress users so i thought i would take some time to give my opinion on this.

My Take

Ok, first of all i’m a wordpress user and secondly i’m a user that releases theme for the wordpress community.

My themes are sponsored by a single sponsor and i have taken the extra step of ensuring that my sponsors do promote a spammy/illegal site on my themes.

Having a sponsor to sponsor my themes allows me to get even more themes out and in turn it also provides wordpress bloggers with even more themes to choose from, i’ve also always been upfront about my themes being sponsored and i’m happy to say that wordpress users are downloading and using my themes as i tracks them via Technorati.

For theme designers that allow spammy links on their footer, i can’t say much for that, it’s up to them.

I don’t really agree with everything Matt had to say in his post but i DO respect him alot and thank him for releasing wordpress to the world, however i think banning sponsored themes is just a really bad idea.

I’ll either this post or do a new one once i go through the many many blog post out there regarding this matter.

What are your thoughts on this?
